Pressure testing
Pipework pressure testing
Buried plumbing fails invisibly: a glue joint lets go under a path, tree roots crush a flexible line, or ground movement shears a pipe at the shell penetration. Pressure testing plugs and pressurises each circuit separately (skimmer line, main drain, returns, solar loop, the balance line to any spa) and watches the gauge. A circuit that will not hold pressure has a fault; the rate of decay hints at its size.
Scope
What this covers
Individual isolation and testing of every accessible circuit
Gauge-monitored hold tests with results recorded per line
Induction of air or tracer where a failed line needs pinpointing along its run
Marking of the indicated dig point to keep excavation surgical
Advice on rerouting versus repair where a line has failed repeatedly
Timing
When it's needed
Ordered when isolation testing shows the shell holds but the system loses water with equipment running, or when a spa drains to a mysterious level overnight, which classically implicates the balance line or its check valves rather than the spa shell itself.
Never fully drain a pool without a groundwater and hydrostatic assessment, shells can lift out of the ground under external water pressure. Isolate power at the switchboard before anyone touches a pool light or its niche, and keep children away from partially drained pools and open excavations during repairs.
Quote variables
What shapes the scope
How many circuits the system runs and where they can be capped
Pipe material and age: older flexible PVC fails along its length, rigid at joints
Depth and surface finish over the runs: lawn digs cheap, stamped concrete does not
Distance between pool and equipment pad, including any under-slab sections
Pool repairs cross several licensed trades in NSW: plumbing work on pool pipework requires a licensed plumber, electrical work at lights and equipment requires a licensed electrician, and structural or building work above prescribed values requires an appropriately licensed contractor under NSW Fair Trading rules. Ask which licence covers each part of your quote and verify it before work begins.
