Leak questions
How do I tell a leak from ordinary evaporation?
Run a bucket test: stand a bucket of pool water on a step, mark both levels, and compare after 24 hours with equipment off. Evaporation lowers both equally; a leak drops the pool faster than the bucket. Sydney summer evaporation can reach a few millimetres a day: losses beyond that, or any loss that speeds up with the pump on, points to a real fault.
Where do pools usually leak?
Penetrations first (skimmer box joints, return fittings, light niches) then buried plumbing, then the shell itself. Genuine structural shell leaks are the least common of the three, which is why detection works through fittings and pipework before anyone talks about cutting concrete.
Does the pool have to be emptied for repairs?
Usually not. Dye testing, acoustic work and pressure testing all run with the pool full, and many fitting and crack repairs use wet-application products or need only a partial level drop. Full drain-downs are a last resort taken only after a hydrostatic assessment, because emptying a pool over high groundwater risks floating the shell.
Is a leaking pool actually urgent?
More than it feels. Beyond the water bill, escaping water undermines paving and coping, erodes backfill around the shell, and in reactive clay can set off ground movement that turns a cheap fitting reseal into a structural repair. Chemically, constant dilution also keeps the water harder to balance and sanitise.
My spa loses water overnight but the pool holds. What is that?
The classic signature of a balance line or check valve fault between spa and pool, water drains back until levels equalise or the line's leak point is reached. It shows up overnight because the fault only matters when the equipment stops. Circuit isolation and pressure testing confirm it quickly.
Concrete, fibreglass, vinyl, does pool type change the repair?
Completely. Concrete takes injection, routing and render patching; fibreglass takes grind-back and re-lamination; vinyl is patched or re-lined. Detection methods overlap across all three, but repair products and techniques do not transfer between materials, so the quote should name your shell type explicitly.
Never fully drain a pool without a groundwater and hydrostatic assessment, shells can lift out of the ground under external water pressure. Isolate power at the switchboard before anyone touches a pool light or its niche, and keep children away from partially drained pools and open excavations during repairs.
